The aim is to evaluate, in a randomised controlled trial, the effect of these reports on quit rates and quitting activity compared with standard self-help and usual care received from the practice. The reports, sent to smokers with varying levels of motivation and readiness to quit identified from general practitioners lists, are based on an assessment of individual needs and tailored to levels of reading ability.
The trial is funded by Cancer Research UK, and is being conducted as a collaboration between UCL, the MRC GPRF and the University of Cambridge.
